From our orbital vantage point,
we observe an Earth without borders,
full of peace, beauty and magnificence,
and we pray that humanity as a whole
can imagine a borderless world as we see it
and strive to live as one in peace.
W. C. "Willie" McCool,
Space Shuttle Columbia pilot,
died on re-entry, 1 February, 2003.
After you read those words on the plaque on the front of the Sky Chapel, you enter only to discover that it too is still under construction. Another sign states that there will be more services at a later date, but that for now, there is only the empty hall and a path that leads to a single door.
Real Space Heroes & Heroines Memorial:
Here we honor the first humans who died in Spaceships.
If you have to ask, you’ve missed the obvious. Everything costs. Space travel is like Liberty, it isn’t free. Someone has to pay for it, with their lives. And it would be irresponsible to dream such a great dream as Space flight and not recall those who have already paid for our seeking it. So here, we honor the real Heroes and Heroines of Space. (…and we should never forget Willie’s words.)
