The Saucer Fleet

THE SAUCER FLEET examines the 17 most influential Flying Saucer designs of the 20th Century, their designers, and the stories surrounding their creation. These stories tell of the evolution of the Flying Saucer concept from their discovery until their hey-day in the 1960s. The Saucer Fleet shows how the work of artists and creators succeeded in promoting the flying saucers’ struggle for acceptance in the Entertainment media, and how the media spread their influence throughout the world.

Written by Jack Hagerty and Jon Rogers with a foreword by noted astronomer Dr. Phil Plait, the book is large (11.5" by 9") hardbound, and contains over 300 pages including Introductions, Appendices, a 17 page index; and has a beautiful oil painted cover. In addition to the 45 detailed Data Drawing sheets that are central to its documenting Flying Saucers of the 20th Century, it contains many color pictures, and additional illustrations.

Chapter descriptions:
Chapter 1 "The Coming of the Fleet", documents the events and sets the stage for the whole post-war flying saucer phenomenon. What really happened that caused millions to believe we’d been invaded by a fleet of extra-terrestrial spaceships?
Chapter 2 "The Day the Earth Stood Still." This was the first “visitor from outer space” film ever made. This classic film tells a timeless story and it’s new version is in theaters today.
Chapter 3 "Twin Earths" The sci-fi adventure strip that introduced flying saucers from outer space to millions of people the world over for eight years during the Cold War. And they brought Spies with them!
Chapter 4 "War of the Worlds." This 1953 epic brought Manta-ray Saucers to conquer the Earth in a story that is still being told to moviegoers today. Why? Because this is still a frightening possibility.
Chapter 5 "This Island Earth." A highly acclaimed film that twists the relationship between Earthlings and Aliens. Could it be one of the biggest Sci-Fi films in history?
Chapter 6 "Forbidden Planet." Possibly the greatest Sci-Fi film of all time, it predicts the day when Humans will fly the Stars in our own flying saucers and what they might find out there, waiting for them.
Chapter 7 "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers." A low budget thriller that set the popular standard for what a "real" flying saucer looks like and reinforced convictions that if Aliens did arrive in flying saucers they would be gunning for us.
Chapter 8 "Disneyland Flying Saucer Ride." Finally, saucers you could ride in and float above the Earth. Really!
Chapter 9 "Lost in Space." It showed us a family out exploring the Stars in their own flying saucer. If not for "Star Trek", this would be THE best remembered Sci-Fi show of the '60s. Today, its fan base exceeds Trekkers in fervor, if not size.
Chapter 10 "The INVADERS." Another frightening portrayal of what might happen if flying saucers were to really land on Earth. This Quinn Martin series got everybody’s attention when it originally aired. It has since come to be seen as a quality Sci-Fi / social satire, telling us more about ourselves than the Aliens.
Epilog “What Have We Learned From The Saucer Fleet” This gives a short but penetrating synopsis of what had occurred during the first decade of flying saucers on Earth. It should give you cause to think over what you believe about flying saucers.
Appendix A: “The Night The Saucer Fleet Bombed Bellingham” What was it like to be there and really experience a mass flying saucer landing. This is a true personal story by one of the authors that shows one of the positive effects that the saucer fleet has had.
