S.S. Absyrtis
The Absyrtis proved that everyone's dreams deserve a second chance.
.
.
The Absyrtis is unique amongst Science Fiction spaceships. She was destined to become the first private space yacht.
.
The Absyrtis is the subject of a story entitled "Contraband Rocket". The Absyrtis was an obsolete military spaceship that had lived past her time and had been sold for scrap. However an amateur rocket Society found her first.
,
.
Discovering her to be an obsolete but restorable spaceship they decided to refurbish it, and launch her into space. This brought down the wrath of the government on their heads. They had to fight for their right to fly into Space against the government's bureaucratic might. Here is an interesting story of the battle between a society that does not want individuals to have the freedom to travel in space and a group determined to do so.
.
The Absyrtis is depicted in such a clear way that she is extremely believable. This is the result of being designed by a real aerospace engineer, Harry Stine. Her capabilities as an atomic rocketship are detailed in an appendix to the story. For example she has a maximum thrust of 2500 metric tons and a specific impulse of 2680 seconds. As such she would be an eminently capable vehicle for exploring the planets.
.
Another example is that her wings are a steep angled design and could conceivably be transonic. Also she is described as using a catalyst propellant with her atomic engine. This gives her a far greater thrust than Ion engines and a greater specific impulse than any chemical engine.
.
The Absyrtis is one of the least known of the Golden Age Spaceships. However, she is also one of the most graceful. If only we had such a spaceship today. Perhaps private citizens could go into Space.
