Docking Bay 54

 Starship Vittoria

The Vittoria was designed by G. Harry Stine and was originally presented in 1954 in Lee Correy’s novel "Starship Through Space." The novel takes us through her construction, initial test flight, and first voyage to a nearby star-- Alpha Centauri. The Vittoria is not a rocketship but the farthest extension of the dream of traveling to the stars.

Traveling to the stars on the Bridge of the Starship Vittoria
                                       .
The ship is a flying saucer.  While the propulsion system is never detailed, the rest of the ship is thoroughly outlined. During the period this book was written this type of spacecraft had picked up the connotation of always being created by aliens. It was therefore thought to be the most capable of spaceships possible. Naturally, this was the design we would want to use for an advanced ship of interstellar exploration. Only this flying saucer would be built by humans.
         .
Included in the Vittoria, in addition to all the necessary items for life support, were all the things that you might need if you were to explore a distant planet; chemistry labs, zoology labs, anthropology lab, geology labs, etc.  The ship itself is an exception to the rule that all spaceships are rocketships.
                         .
It is not a rocket ship.  The matter of its propulsion is not exactly explained. No theory yet today exists to explain what type of propulsion for any faster than light spaceship.  The Vittoria asks, "Given the engine, what does the rest of an Interstellar exploration Starship look like?" and then proceeds to answer the question.
                     .
Given the propulsion systems feasibility, the rest of the ship makes good engineering sense.
