 Disneyland Moonliner

Yes, it's the Disneyland Moonliner. Designed by John Hench and originally presented in Disneyland in 1955, this spaceship is probably the most universally recognized Atomic Rocketship.

                                 .
The DisneyLand Moonliner as it was at the opening of Disney Land in 1957
                                 .
This is also the only atomic powered moon rocket thousands of people have actually ridden in. That’s because it served as a premium ride in Disneyland for the first several years of the park's existence.  What most people don't remember is that the Moonliner actually had a name.
                    .
When you went on the ride you were actually supposed to be getting into one of two identical spaceships, one named the Star of Polaris and the other named the Star of Antaries
                            .
Taking its cues from both the sleek ships of the earlier movie, Destination Moon, it added the color and paint scheme of the then current Trans World Airways airlines to give the impression of a regular flight to our moon.

Because this was a design meant to impress people, it had most of the things needed to communicate its capabilities.  It had the right shape, functional looking landing gear, the ability to get people into and out of it conveniently. And the ride that followed, was convincing. It had all of the basic things you would expect of a standard airliner translated into space liner to have.
                                   .
Today, in 2009, the Moonliner is back in TomorrowLand. A portend of things to come?
                                              .
Today you will find that the Moonliner is back at Disneyland showing how timeless its appeal was.
             .
Who knows, maybe it is still a predictor of things to come.
