Mars Spaceship
This Spaceship was designed by J. MacMillan Johnson and was originally presented in Movie: Conquest of Space in 1955.

Watching George Pal's version of von Braun's Mars Ship is a treat in itself. In this movie version, von Braun’s expedition has shrunk to where it is a single ship. It is actually two ships in one. It is a combination of a Mars Landing boat and a smaller Passenger ship. The Mars Spaceship as shown in the movie Conquest Of Space is very similar to the original von Braun Mars Lander designs with its huge swept wing span.
.
However, it differs with the inclusion of retrorockets along the leading edge of the main wing. Another slight design difference is the fact that the departure fuel tanks are in a triangular configuration, as are the engines.
.
In the movie, the trip to Mars is a major achievement. We see men moving in and around the ship as it transports them to another planet. It is like watching all of the theoretical designs and drawings of von Braun’s Collier series coming to life and carrying us into the world of what could possibly be.
.
When the ship lands on Mars, men do not have to erect the return vessel manually as was originally planned. It has a powered erection device. Then, instead of merely returning to Mars orbit, the vessel brings them all the way back to Earth. A very impressive sight to watch.
.
While the movie itself was not seen as much of a success, the vision of the Mars Spaceship flying through space was very inspiring.
