Spaceship Luna
Of all of the films made about space travel, Destination Moon is one of the three most influential. And the spaceship that is the centerpiece of the film and creates the reality of the space flight is the spaceship Luna.
.
.
It was designed by Ernst Fegte and is the most recognizable classic Atomic powered spaceship of the 50's and rightly so. Simple and pure lines made an efficient design for a winged Spaceship. the Luna comes to us from an age when she was the most starkly realistic spaceship that could be imagined. The primary reason for this was the atomic rocket engine which used water as propellant. The wings would only be used for re-entry.
.
.
An atomic powered single stage earth to moon and return rocket ship, this ship typifies the dreams of what science fiction and space enthusiasts expected the future of space flight to be like. Shown in Technicolor to packed audiences Destination Moon and the Luna were a technical tour de force. It is easy to see why this ship was chosen over Chesley Bonestelle’s proposal.
.
.
In this design the wings were very far back on the fuselage. There they also served as stabilizers and devices to help slow the spaceship for its reentry into the Earth's atmosphere. After re-entry, they also gave the Luna controlled flight while it returned to its home base. However, the ship’s final set-down was supposed to be by a method that we did not get to see in the movie, a parachute stowed in the nose.
.
.
The Luna was a beautiful ship, influential and well constructed. The Luna thrilled many with the possibilities of realistic moon flight in the next decade.
