Docking Bay 42
Challenge 142
For the movie "It! The Terror From Beyond Space" Bonestell’s design has grown tremendously it has doubled in length. Still the Challenge 142 has the same shape as Bonestell's Luna.
.
.
The reason it was made much larger was due to the plot needing a lot more room for the movie’s monster to crawl through in chasing the poor, frightened human crew. In a movie that had almost all of the elements of "Alien" the ship itself merely serves as a stage upon which the action takes place.
.
Interestingly there were several changes to the original design. Besides making it larger, they also cut a lot of airlocks into the side of the ship. Also, when it was shown in the movie, they positioned it so that it would not show its massive delta wings. By the time 1958 arrived, wings on spaceships were thought to be not realistic.
.
Already we had begun to move beyond the concept of a flying spaceship.
