Docking Bay 38
R X-M

.
With Life’s Moonship as its model, the R X-M was designed very quickly for a low-budget movie of the same name. By getting to the theaters first, Rocketship X-M was able to exploit George Pall’s forward advertising for his up-and-coming blockbuster film about a trip to the moon (Destination Moon).
.
.
That aside the movie contained significant amounts of drama in a scientifically thin story. The drama was helped by a very melodramatic script that included love triangles and off world aliens. This and timing made it a very successful movie. Because of the story’s impact, the R X-M had significant influence on many who went to see the movie.
.
Rocketship X-M was a two-stage rocket that was originally designed to go to the moon. For this, the ship was an extension of Life’s Moonship and looked the part. However, during the trip, due to a series of dramatic mishaps the ship went to Mars instead. (the acceptance of this destination shows the general public’s lack of understanding of basic Astronomy during this time.) There they are attacked by a band of mutants. Hastily they blast off for home. Due to the requirements for entertainment, many erroneous ideas about space flight were put forth during the movies story unfolding.
.
.
Nonetheless, this space ship did have one honest feature about it. On the return flight it ran out of fuel. While a major problem for all real spacecraft, this is something that most spaceships in movies or TV seem to have little difficulty with.
However, Rocketship X-M, by running out of fuel on the return ship, proved fatal to all aboard. In that way it added a very stark element of reality to a dramatic but otherwise unscientific plot.
