Docking Bay 29
E.S.S. Pioneer
By 1940, the public's exposure to more scientifically designed rockets required a more streamlined design to be convincing, even in the newspaper comic strips. This new class of spaceship began a trend by dropping the earlier front placement of the rocket engines, putting them behind the ship and acquiring streamlining and winged fins for flying and landing.
.

.
Subsequently for a new grand adventure, Buck Rogers was given one of these new far more sophisticated spaceships than any he had before. The Pioneer was the feature spaceship of a series of stories that would last throughout the latter 30s and early 1940s.
.
Influenced by the advancement of rocketry during the 30s, this 1940 rocketship heralded the oncoming of the 'golden era of the spaceship.' The ESS Pioneer also took millions of Buck Rogers fans on a yearlong adventure across space to a planet with no less than five dictators. Each dictator had his own monstrous kind of power and each had to be overcome in turn if the safety of the Earth was to be preserved.
.

.
With its long cylindrical body, inverted seagull like wings, ability to function in various environments and land on any terrain, it seemed like a whole new type of spaceship. It even featured an extendible gun turret to defend itself from rear attacks. Actually it was an interim design spaceship between the earlier more crude attempts and the later designs that would be even more affected by the scientific community. Art was following Science.
.
With the ESS Pioneer, fictional spaceships came much closer to reality than they has been before. The Pioneer was somewhat ahead of its time and its influence would be felt well into the 1950s. And no wonder, it is a beautiful little ship.
