 Disney Mars Landing Boat

One drawback of the Umbrella Ship was that it couldn't generate enough thrust to land on the surface of a planet. To solve this, they carried a chemically powered two stage 'Landing Boat' along with them for the trip down to Mars' surface.

The Umbrella ship's Landing Boat stands on Mars

                            .
This design for a landing boat was very different from earlier designs. They did not use von Braun's wing method to land; they used a combination of Rocket thrust and parachute.  The landing boat was finned and streamlined in both directions.  It’s final method of landing was to have a large parachute slow its final descent.
                              .
After the exploration of Mars had taken place, the upper part of the ship would split apart and the return rocket would launch from within the ship itself. The plan was for the landing boat’s upper stage to take off, return to orbit, and capture the umbrella ship for the return to Earth. The upper stage would then be left orbiting Mars
                                  .
One interesting feature of the landing boat is the fact that, once again as in the earliest von Braun Moon designs, we see the use of a center spike to hold the up the weight of the rocket while four legs stabilized it.
                                              .
It was a very unusual looking spaceship. After use, it would be left with its second stage abandoned in orbit and its first stage sitting forever on the plains of Mars.
