Disney Ferry Rocket

By the time von Braun designed this version of his Ferry Rocket for the Walt Disney "Man in Space" TV program in 1955, many developments in Space travel science had occurred. So Von Braun introduced a modified version of his earlier Colliers ferry design.  While the Disney Ferry Rocket looks very similar to his earlier design for Colliers, this ship is much smaller in overall mass and size.

One reason it was smaller was that it was expected to carry less personnel and material into orbit. Also, you can see that the ship's final stage for personnel transportation to Orbit and return has a delta wing instead of the swept back version it had earlier. This was done for artistic reasons as it was thought to be more modern in 1955.

Knowing that he still had to transport several tons of material into orbit economically, this Ferry rocket was also fully reusable.  However, there were some changes. He had modified the third stage design so it could be replaced with two separate interchangeable modules, one designed for dry cargo, and the other as a fuel tanker.
              .
This particular ferry rocket was a major improvement over his earlier proposal.  In the interim he had both scaled down his materiel requirement and improved the rocket’s efficiency.
            .
This was a beautiful and inspirational design that thrilled millions when it appeared on television on March 9, 1955.  It was an exciting foretelling of things to come.
