Docking Bay 13
Mars Passenger Ship Magazine Version
For several years Werner von Braun would write in Colliers magazine and in books of his plans for a grand Mars expedition. His first design for this adventuresome mission would be a convoy of several ships.
In the magazine articles he showed several different designs for his Mars exploration spaceships, most of which looked very similar to his moon exploration ships. The Mars passenger ship that was shown in Colliers very closely resembled the Moon passenger ship, having the same general open architecture, removable outer tanks. It was also the same length and had the same general details.
There were several differences that made this an Earth to Mars ship. Even though there are tremendous differences in the distance, the Delta-V (velocity needed) to go to Mars is only a little more than that needed to go to the moon and return, IF you use a Hohmann orbit. Of course that is what he planned to use. Von Braun had calculated that only an additional 20% of Delta V (difference in velocity) was needed for the trip.
So, he designed the ship without, the center landing spike, the landing stabilizer legs, and several of the engines used for making the moon landing. Without these heavy pieces of hardware the ship would have a lower mass and just be able to make it to Mars. Other than these differences, there is little to distinguish the Mars passenger ship from the Moon passenger ship.
However, it must be remembered that this design represents Von Braun’s first attempt at an interplanetary spaceship.
And that makes it the first interplanetary spaceship ever engineered.
