.
Besides introducing the beautiful Moonship to Americans after WWII, Willey Ley and Chesley Bonestell also proposed a Transcontinental aircraft as a derivative of their space ship design.
To fly into near space, skip along the top of the atmosphere to a destination half-way around the world would be an easy task for a spaceship and would bring any place on the earth to within an hour travel time of one another.
Owing much to Sanger's Silver Bird, the Transcontinental Transport pointed the way to an era of quick intercontinental travel in the future.
Although not in itself a spaceship, it is the one other Rocketship shown in their landmark book, Conquest of Space.
The Transcontinental Transport was illustrated to show the benefits of developing space travel hardware and applying them to the problem of long distance travel on Earth. It is a winged rocket plane that, by blasting its way into low orbit, could travel to any place on Earth in a matter of minutes. Its flight plan owed a lot to Eugene Sanger’s Silver Bird. It could skip along the upper atmosphere to reach a destination anywhere on the planet.
