Docking Bay 03
The Modell E
Note: Please refer to Docking Bay 02 for more on Dr. Hermann Oberth.
Also presented in his ground breaking 1923 book, "Rocket through Interplanetary Space" was Hermann Oberth's first Spaceship, and the granddaddy of all present spacecraft, the Modell E.
Oberth’s Modell E was his first scientifically designed rocket intended to achieve interplanetary spaceflight. Again, because Tsiolkovsky’s work was unknown outside of Russia, it was the only spaceship design to known western civilization.
Based on the Modell B, it was a two-stage rocket, with a first stage fueled by alcohol and the second stage by hydrogen. Like its predecessor, the second stage was carried completely within the first stage. When the first stage had reached maximum altitude, it would open the clamshell doors in its nose and eject the second stage.
Oberth worked through most of the technical details needed to achieve spaceflight, and incorporated them in this landmark design. It is incredible how accurate and well designed it is considering the fact that it was created in 1923. The second stage of the Modell E was intended to carry human occupants in a trip around the moon, making it the first interplanetary spaceship.
This dream and the clarity of his plan created a rocket and space craze in Europe during the 20s & 30s. It is arguably the beginning of all modern rockets, spaceships and spacecraft. This finally resulted in the actual realization of his dream in the 1960s.
The Modell E proved that "the dreams you plan, can come true."
