Greetings! Earthlings and Space Travelers!
"What are the facts?
Again and again and again - what are the facts? ...and to how many decimal places?
You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue. Get the facts!"
Paraphrased from Robert A. Heinlein in Lazarus Long’s notebooks

- Spaceship (also Rocketship): The idea or plan for a ship that could carry people into outer space to either the planets or the Stars and return.
- Spacecraft: A real machine that has carried people into space.
- Spaceprobe: A machine engineered to operate autonomously or by remote control in space for information gathering.
- Spacelugger: A machine engineered to carry only cargo in space. (my Coined Term)
These are the dictionary definitions. They give the basic consept of the words. But there is more to the concept "Spaceship" than meets the eye.
The following is an excerpt from my introduction to Spaceship Archeology.
Some insist that a spaceship is just a Machine. But the concept of "Spaceship" has been many things over time, which you will find out as you study its story. It has represented the greatest dream mankind has ever had, it still does so, as an Icon, or symbol. To you it may represent just a Dream or perhaps a Challenge and a Mystery. If so, learning about it may help you in achieving your own life’s dreams.
To other people it may feel like a Guide To The Future, or a means of Escape, or a method of Far Traveling to high adventure. Still others see it as a way of Transcendence of achieving a higher plane while some just see it as a source of Power, a supreme tool for their immediate purposes. Some use it as just a backdrop, A Stage upon which to play out earthy dramas, while a few have changed it into a Magic Carpet that takes them as far away as their imagination can go.
Please note the concepts italicized in the previous two paragraphs. The spaceship has been thought to be each of these ideas to people at one time during its existence. Influence? Considerable. Spaceship Archeology will be addressing all these and more as we go forward.
But first we must answer the most important question, that is:
Top
Spaceship Archeology has determined that, if allowed to continue its influence, the concept of spaceship may alter the nature of human relations and perhaps even physically change the race itself. A corollary of this finding is that if it is eliminated or prevented from influencing human events, humanity’s present destructive tendencies will probably lead to disastrous consequences (more bluntly, the destruction of all human life on Earth).
Is this important? Only if you value you and your children’s future beyond your next meal.
The concept ‘spaceship’ is what is called, a paradigm shifting concept. It is like the car was to the horse, the sailing ship to the paddled canoe, and the airplane was to the auto. In each case, the existence of the new concept expanded the world. The world, that is humanity’s world, would never be the same again.
Likewise, each paradigm shift required new thinking and actions from people living at the time of its discovery or invention. Each concept changed humanity, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. The airplane brought world girdling travel to individuals and it also brought death from the skies. But these were more than the idea, these were actual machines, actual airplanes.
So far, we just have the concept of the Spaceship to live with, but where it points to is truly spectacular. The spacecraft of today are still not able to achieve the abilities of the spaceships of yesterday. However, if mankind persists as it has in other instances, (who in 1917 would have thought an airplane could ever fly over the Atlantic Ocean non-stop, let alone over the Pacific) the spaceship, or spacecraft of tomorrow will be a world altering event--forever.
Study the spaceship?
This is where dreams live. This is where tomorrow begins. This is were hope lies.

Jon has been involved with Aerospace and Rockets his entire life. A witness to the Mercury space program, he was a Nike Fire Controller in ARADCOM, a communications technician at White Sands Missile Range, and a QA Inspector on the Apollo/LEM Communication Antenna systems all before he became an engineer working on the Space Shuttle and various Satellites.
As an electronics and Aerospace engineer he was responsible for building microwave systems for the Space Shuttle, as well as the TDRSS, IntelSat IV, Goes, and SCS series Satellite systems. He holds a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from SJSU, Certifications in Program Management from UC, and Manufacturing Engineering from SME. During his time as an Aerospace Engineer, he has also studied the development of spaceships from concept to reality becoming a recognized expert. He has co-authored and illustrated The Spaceship Handbook, as well as articles on spaceships for Filmfax magazine and the AIAA Houston’s newsletter, Horizons (April, 2008).
He was a speaker at the National Association of Rocketry Convention in Austin (NARCON 2002), the American Astronautical Society (AAS) 50th Annual National Convention (2003), and was interviewed along with co-author Jack Hagerty on Mike Hodel’s Hour 25 online Radio program at the San Jose World SF Convention (ConJose).
